Tracy's Trek: Trails of the Trail
Prior to Youth Conference:
About a month prior to departure, start drinking more water each day than you normally do. Arriving at Martin's Cove well hydrated will help you stay comfortable while there. Start walking! Walk 2-3 miles a couple of times a week, and increase the length overtime. Before Youth Conference you should be able to walk 4-5 miles unassisted.
Break your shoes in. For your weekly walks, use the shoes you will use while trekking on Day 2 of Youth Conference. This will give you confidence that your shoes are broken in and ready to go. Hiking boots are not necessary. Tennis shoes would work well on the trail. Don't wear sandals or flip flops!
While at Youth Conference:
Drink water and eat the meals! The biggest problem at Martin's Cove is not drinking and eating enough. Unfortunately, it is common for Youth to avoid drinking and eating to prevent the need for a bathroom. This is completely unnecessary. There are plenty of restrooms along the trail. And let's be real, everyone uses the bathroom so drink up and use the bathroom too! Dehydration is a dangerous thing. Not drinking enough water can cause headaches, nausea, or other worse things. If you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated. Drink enough to avoid feeling thirsty.
Bring a backpack for the things you will need while trekking. Your backpack will go in your handcart. In your backpack should be your water bottle, sunscreen, bug spray, medications, journal, pen, and lunch. Make sure to apply sunscreen and bug spray regularly.
Stay on the trail! You never know what is hiding in the sagebrush. The amount of foot traffic that frequents the trail keeps critters away, but make sure to stay in your area and they will stay in theirs!
If you need help, ask! We will have at least six trained and highly qualified official nurses with us at all times. They will be prepared to take care of your medical needs. The missionaries are also prepared to handle medical emergencies. But we can't take care of you unless we know. So speak up!
By following the directions of your Company Captains, and you will stay safe and happy throughout our experience.
